Convert text and files to UTF-8

Open a supported text or document file, choose or detect its source encoding, and convert it to UTF-8.

Review the decoded content and download a UTF-8 copy. File processing stays in your browser.

Hides additional parameters for encoding declaration.

Checking file contents

Waiting for file

When you select a file, the tool automatically flags potentially dangerous code so you can check it before using it. Validation does not block saving or run content.

    No matches do not mean the file is completely safe. Do not run or publish unknown PHP/JS/HTML based solely on this check.

    The result is saved as UTF-8; BOM is disabled by default.

    How to correct the encoding and not get cracked

    When you select a file, the tool automatically detects the BOM, checks UTF-8 and analyzes the text for typical features of common encodings. For Russian files, Windows-1251, KOI8-R and DOS-866 are taken into account; for HTML, XML and CSS the encoding declaration is also read. The result immediately appears on the right and is ready to be saved.

    • Automatic recognition of UTF-8/BOM, UTF-16 and common text encodings;
    • Support for Cyrillic, English, HTML/XML/CSS declarations and preservation of original line breaks;
    • Save to UTF-8 with or without BOM, with choice of result extension;
    • Extracting plain text from DOCX and storing it in UTF-8 TXT;
    • automatic checking of the selected file for suspicious structures.

    Auto-check does not replace an antivirus and does not guarantee file security. For DOCX, only plain text is saved: the document itself is not re-encoded, since there is no single text encoding in the ZIP package.

    How to get the correct UTF-8

    1. Insert text or open the file. The button adapts to the selected format: TXT, HTML, HTM, PHP, CSS, JS, JSON, XML or DOCX.
    2. After selecting a file, the encoding is determined automatically. For ambiguous files, common Russian encodings and tags within HTML/XML/CSS are used; the status will show what exactly was determined.
    3. Specify the name, result extension, and whether to add a BOM. Preparation preserves characters without normalization and without changing the text.
    4. When opening a file, auto-check starts itself. For pasted text, click "Prepare UTF-8" - suspicious matches will also appear automatically.
    5. Download the result. DOCX is converted to plain text only; for a Word file there is not one encoding that can be switched without changing the container.

    File content does not run. Autocheck does not guarantee security. Limit - 2,000,000 characters; DOCX - up to 12 MB.
