Online Diff Checker features

ExtraTools Visual Diff & Code Checker is a fast browser-based tool for comparing text, source code, and documents. It highlights additions, deletions, and edits between two versions of a file or text snippet.

The tool uses the sequence comparison algorithm Myers diff algorithmto find a shortest edit path between texts. It supports Unicode, so Russian and English text, punctuation, and special characters are handled consistently.

  • 2 display modes: Side-by-side shows two columns with line numbers. Unified combines changes in one list with + and - markers.
  • Word and character highlights: Changed words and characters are highlighted within each edited line.
  • Syntax highlighting: Detect and highlight JSON, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, and plain text.
  • Comparison filters: Ignore leading or trailing spaces, blank lines, or letter case when comparing documents.
  • Export: Download standard patch files .diff / .patch for use with Git, or download a standalone HTML report.
  • Local and private: Text is processed in your browser. Source files are not uploaded to the server.

How to use the Diff Checker

Compare the original text on the left with the edited version on the right to find what changed.

  • Add text: Paste text, select Insert example, or drop a text file into either input. TXT, JSON, JS, HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, and MD files up to 10 MB are supported.
  • Swap button: Switches the before and after text with one click.
  • Side-by-side mode: Shows both versions in separate columns. Line heights and scrolling stay in sync when this option is enabled.
  • Unified mode: Shows changes in one list, which is useful on smaller screens and for reviewing commits.
  • Simplified mode: Hides advanced options and filters so you can compare text with the basic settings.
  • Export: Copy or download a patch (.patch) for use with Git (git apply), or download a standalone HTML report to share with others.
  • Privacy: All comparison runs locally in JavaScript. Your text is not sent over the network.
